Fireflys
/ Today, I saw my first RL firefly, or "Lighting Bug" as they call them around here. AMAZING! It was just after sundown, and I was in the back yard, on the phone with JTaur, when I saw a bright yellow-white light. I thought it was a reflection of a headlight on a wire or something. The "Flashes" are not really flashes, as I was led to believe, but long streaks for about 1 second long -- and Bright Amazing bugs! I see why scientists were so fascinated by them for so long. - - - - - First week of work in Dallas, and all is well. I'm finding the work fun to do, and interesting, and I think I'm doing a good job. Next week I think things will really step up and the pressure will be on. Only time will tell. MADE IT!
/ Man, what a drive! That was the longest trip by car I've ever done. Three days of driving, with stopping only for gas and sleep. Last trip nearly that was from Rexberg Idaho, to Napa, California, which I did in 1983. That is a little over 800 miles. Half the distance I just drove. In fact, I did 150 more than that just on Friday (my birthday) between Phoenix, Arizona and Amarillo Texas. Saw a lot of interesting things on the way. Next time I know not to blow though the desert as fast and have some free time to do some sight seeing. Somewhere near the California-Arizona border, I passed "The General Patton Museum", which had a lot of old tanks and APC's. I got gas near it, so I shot a couple of pictures from my car. (Not sure how well they came out.) I've heard from many people how beautiful the desert is, and I blew it off as more infatuation with being alone. Boy was I wrong! My grandmother also had made a lot of painting of the lower Arizona landscape, which I though she she was exaggerating the colors in them... she wasn't! The pinks and reds of the soil, the yellow, tans and greens of the plant, the rock and mountain shapes, and all.. Wow! Next itme I'll spent a little time photographing it! (Next time... next time...) In Arizona, I drove past Meteor Crater. Man, it was tempting to go see that.... Unfortunately my goal was 950 miles that day so I didn't have any spare time to drive the 35 miles from I-40 to the crater, see it, then back again. (Next time... next time..) Also, there are a lot of Indian shops selling everything from blankets, to petrified wood, to jewelry, to meteorites! Man, if I had the time it would have been nice to check some of them out... (Next time... next time...) Well, I'll write more later, got to go shopping for supplies and such here in Dallas Texas. Leaving in a Small Purple Car...
/ Leaving in a Small Purple Car, don't know when I'll be back again. Writing this just before leaving Napa, CA for Dallas, TX, for an extended stay. Driving the nearly 2000 miles (3500 km IIRC) in three days. Dallas is where a new job is. It's Embedded Controls programing and Electronics hardware for a company called "Turbochef". Right now it's Temp-Contract work, and for 4 to 6 months, but there is a possibility of it becoming full time. If it does, I hope that I can work from home (Napa)... we'll see. The pay is good, but I have to be in Dallas, not home, so it will be hard. Closing up the Ancestral Philipp Manor (APM) for those months. Have a good friend taking care of the place, but still -- I'd rather be home. (It might not look it, I'm quite attached to the APM) Wish me luck! IB PS: last bit of typing I'll do on this computer for a while! | | Wednesday, October 12th, 2005 | | 7:13 pm |
